Heer Ranjha

The project attracted many people who had not engaged in previous projects from an intergenerational group (10 to 60 age range) of Panjabi speaking members of Pakistani and Indian Communities residing in Newham. Many challenging themes that are relevant today:

  • romance
  • migration
  • politics
  • personal conflicts
  • family relationships
  • intrigue
  • greed
  • opposing views

were explored in the 12 workshops of two hours. Performances of the play were at:

  • Lynk Reach Premises in partnership with Lister Community School
  • Victoria and Albert Museum

The audience represented a wide cross-section of London’s diverse communities. This was excellent for community cohesion aspect of the project. The DVDs have been distributed to participants and more widely to Newham Secondary Schools and South Asian Panjabi and English speaking communities through our website nationally.

The play was also be broadcast by Desi Radio for Panjabi speakers in West London. There were many skills the participants learnt including collaboration, older members supporting younger ones with their pronunciation, the group also designed costumes.

Their showcase comprised of drama, music and songs please see the DVD and a CD of songs and a CD of photographs enclosed. Cultural barriers were transcended to share the Heer Ranjha Story and two women felt empowered and confident enough to secure a fulltime post following the project stating the project had boosted their confidence and this had helped them at their respective interviews, one as an assistant at a nursery in Hackney and the second as an assistant in science department at a local secondary school.
