Lynking the Worlds Together

Auschwitz

'Lynking the Worlds Together' invited people to attend an inter-generational trip, as Tony would have liked, uniting community groups who might not have been otherwise  and transcending socio-economic and cultural divides.
The trip to Auschwitz took place on 7th November 2007. Under 25s were entitled to a 50% discount on the cost of their trip thanks to the generous support of the Jack Petchey Foundation.

Trip Details
On November 7, 2007, Lynk Reach were invited by Jeffery Pinnick of Yad Vashem UK Foundation and Barry Burns to undertake a day return trip with our young people to Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II – Birkenau and to visit Galicia Jewish Museum, Krakow.

Parents/Carers, elders, teachers and artists were also invited to accompany the young people. The LtWT/Lynk Reach party included 33 young people under the age of 25. Thanks must be given to the Jack Petchey Foundation, who provided Sponsorship of £150 towards the cost of each of the young people’s trip. The balance of the cost was secured with the support of their families, schools and communities. The party consisted of 200 people (intergenerational and inter-faith).

The groups who undertook this trip together contributed to an event to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day, falling in the week beginning 28 January 2008, as an integral part of our commitment to a Community Cohesion Agenda.

Auschwitz is the world's most notorious place of genocide, commencing it’s existence as a concentration camp for political prisoners in 1940. In 1942 it became the centre for the extermination of European Jews. In 1940 - 1945 the Nazis killed about 1.5 million people there, mainly Jews but also Poles, Gypsies, Russian prisoners of war and people of other nations.

We spent about 3.5 hours in Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II – Birkenau concentration camps, with a tour by the Museum's licensed guides. Tour Guides demonstrated a level of wisdom, knowledge and skill that made the visit truly memorable. The tours of Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II – Birkenau were very informative and extremely moving and thought provoking.

The tour began with a 15-minute documentary film about the liberation of the camp. The guides then showed us exhibits in some of the surviving prison blocks, the gas chamber and the crematorium. At Auschwitz II – Birkenau, we went up to the watchtower above the entrance gate to see the view of the biggest Nazi extermination camp.

After completing our tour of the camps, we visited the Galicia Jewish Museum, Krakow, which exists to celebrate the Jewish culture of Galicia and to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust, presenting Jewish history from a new perspective.
