| The National Archives Showcase | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
On Wednesday 2nd July, at The National Archives, Lynk Reach presented a showcase of music, poetry, drama and dance, focusing on Panjabi experience of Partition and performed by young people from Newham secondary schools and community groups. The work was inspired by the oral histories of the Panjabi community, the rich historical resources held by The National Archives and Mazhar Tirmazi’s play, ‘A Lifetime on Tiptoes’, which gives this year-long Heritage-Lottery funded project its name. Students from Lister Community School and Brampton Manor worked with poet Abe Gibson and the Newham-based dance groups Konspiracy and Unity (current World Hip Hop Champions) and dance and drama group Breaking Through to produce their pieces. Community groups and individuals from East London were also involved. The evening culminated in the performance of a song from the play, ‘Langh Aaja Patan Chanah da Yaar’ (or ‘Come across the depths of the River Chanah my love’) and a group of Jago dancers, who encouraged the entire audience to join in towards the end of their piece. The project has been supported by Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham in Newham and Minsiter of State for Employment and Welfare Reform, who commented “It’s great to see East and West London uniting together through the partnership of Lynk Reach and the National Archives to deliver this important project”, as well as John McDonnell, MP for Hayes and Harlington in Hillingdon and Chair of the All Party Panjabis in Britain association, who said: “This wonderful initiative not only tells the often hidden story of the human suffering experienced in the partition of India but also more importantly it relates it to modern day tragedies caused by division. Lessons of history are learnt and in a world of potential violence and insecurity this work makes a significant contribution to understanding our common humanity." |

| African Drumming and Dance Sessions | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
As part of Lynk Reach’s Partition of India – A Lifetime on Tiptoes, Heritage Lottery Funded Project, West African drumming and dance company, Mbilla Arts, will be leading an after school workshops, starting after autumn half-term in African drumming and dance at St Edward's Comprehensive School and Language College. The sessions will be led by drumming tutor Seneke Sillah from The Gambia and dance tutor Chantelle Michaux. Participants will learn drumming rhythms, dances and songs from the countries now known as Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Guinea-Conakry and Guinea-Bissau (the area of West Africa which was once the ancient Empire of Mali). The sessions will highlight the deep-rooted cultural, linguistic and family traditions that have prevailed between the peoples of these countries despite the political barriers imposed on the region. The high-energy rhythms and dances taught during the sessions will improve fitness and co-ordination and enable students to explore the influence that African drumming and dance has had on urban music and dance styles. Creativity will also be encouraged, as students will be given the opportunity to create their own rhythms and dance movements. The course will culminate in a performance at the school at the end of the autumn term. |
